If you feel nervous about walking down the aisle, try a simple grounding trick. Look around and notice what you can see, feel and hear. It brings you back into the moment and reminds you that you're surrounded by people who love you. This is exactly the technique I used just before I walked down the aisle!
What is the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique?
When you start to feel nervous, pause and gently focus on your senses:
5 – See
Look around and name five things you can see. It could be flowers, chairs, a smiling guest, the aisle, or the sky if you’re outdoors.
4 – Feel
Notice four things you can physically feel. For example: your feet in your shoes, the fabric of your outfit, your bouquet in your hands, or the ground beneath you.
3 – Hear
Listen for three sounds around you. Perhaps the music playing, guests chatting quietly, birds outside, or your partner’s voice.
2 – Smell
Notice two things you can smell. Maybe flowers, perfume, or the fresh air.
1 – Taste
Focus on one thing you can taste — even if it’s just the last sip of water or the taste in your mouth.
Why It Works
This technique gently shifts your brain away from anxious thoughts and brings your attention back to the present moment. It slows down racing thoughts and helps your body settle. For many couples, doing this just before the ceremony begins can make a huge difference. It certainly did for me!
Remember, we'll have got to know each other quite well by the time your wedding day comes around, so I'll also be a friendly face at the end of the aisle!
