Why Would a Wedding Celebrant Take a First Aid Course?

Today I attended a first aid course at Stage Left, Paignton, lead by Riviera Event Solutions. As a wedding celebrant, I already have to stay grounded under pressure and lead rooms full of people, and first aid is an extension of that skill set. I'm also the kind of person who likes to be as prepared as possible, so I'm always open to learning new things that could help in a specific situation.

Emotions are high, breakfasts have been skipped, champagne is served before noon, and temperatures can soar, so I like to know that I can be on hand to assist if you or your guests were to experience a 'funny turn' or something more serious. Weddings bring together people of all ages, backgrounds, and health conditions. Grandparents, young children, pregnant guests, people with allergies, anxiety, or medical conditions, all sharing one space. When adding in all of these things, it becomes clear that while emergencies are rare, they can happen. I realised that if something did go wrong, even something small, I wanted to be more than just someone who stood by helplessly waiting for others to step in.

As a celebrant, my role is to guide a ceremony, hold the emotional tone of the day, and help everyone feel safe and supported. Doing a first aid course felt like a natural extension of that responsibility. It’s not about expecting the worst, it’s about being prepared for the unexpected. Knowing how to respond to a fainting guest, a fall, a panic attack, or a medical emergency gives me confidence and clarity. Instead of freezing or panicking, I can act calmly and appropriately while help is on the way.

At the heart of my work is care. Care for my couples, their guests, and the experience we’re creating together. I genuinely hope I never need to use my first aid training at a wedding. But if I do, I’ll be grateful I took the time to prepare. Because love stories deserve to be celebrated safely, calmly, and with care, and I’m proud to do everything I can to support that.
